Industry sector standardization—applicability to credit rating agencies
- The Market Data Advisory Committee (MDAC), a SEBI-established standing committee comprised of representatives from stock exchanges, depositories, and other market participants, examined existing industry classification structures across sectors and developed a harmonised four-level industry classification framework for adoption by all stakeholders and for all relevant processes/ purposes in the Indian securities market (Classification placed at Annexure A)
- Credit rating agencies are urged to use this streamlined industry classification for rating exercises, peer benchmarking, and research activities such as research for the economy, industries, and companies, as the streamlined framework will help bring uniformity to the classifications used across sectors and in the securities market.
- As a result of the foregoing, credit rating agencies will fall under the above-mentioned industrial categorization as of October 1, 2022. Meanwhile, any input and proposed modifications from credit rating agencies would be recalibrated through exchanges, if possible.
- This circular is issued in the exercise of the powers conferred on the Securities and Exchange Board of India by Section 11 (1) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992, read with the provisions of Regulation 20 of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Credit Rating Agencies) Regulations, 1999, to protect the interests of investors in securities and to promote the development and regulation of the securities market.
